Events and special flights

All pilots (PIC) wishing to operate under IFR at Sion must be trained and qualified for local IFR approach procedures with a plane that can carry out an IGS approach on a 6° slope initially then 4.0° on final approach.
Qualification A
DA/MDA 8,000 feet min.

Training circuits
All aircraft must carry serviceable radio equipment and the pilot must own a radio licence (English only). Inbound traffic should establish initial contact with the control tower (118.275 MHz) when arriving over the following locations: Martigny, for inbound traffic from the west; in the Rhône Leuk Valley, for inbound traffic from the east; in the Rhône Sanetsch Valley, for inbound traffic from the north; or 5 minutes before entering the control zone (CTR).
The descent must be planned in order to not reach MNM ALT before the REP, while taking safety into account. The S (Sierra) reporting point is used when runway 07 is in use, while the N (November) point is used when runway 25 is in use. Do not confuse E1 with E2. E2 (Village of Saint-Léonard) is closer to the airport than E1 (Town of Sierre). For arrivals from the east, care must be taken not to enter the TMA without ATC authorisation.
Filing a flight plan (FPL) or a flight notification is mandatory before every flight. For outbound VFR aircraft, it is not necessary to request start-up, except in the event of an IFR link-up planned within the Geneva area (Z flight plan). Taxi according to the instructions provided by Sion ground staff 121.705 Mhz to the holding point on the active runway. Crossing the runway towards holding point 07 is permitted only with the authorisation of Sion ground staff. Prior to departure, convey your exit route (through NW or through Z1).
Tower (118.275 MHz) and Ground (121.705 Mhz) frequencies can be coupled. If take-off clearance is received on the Ground frequency, change independently to the Tower frequency once the take-off phase is complete. After departure, leave the CTR while keeping to the right of the valley and report “Through NW” or “Through Z1”.
When the weather is ideal for flying in the Alps, numerous aircraft travel through the Rhône Valley. To request a crossing, simply make an announcement over the Tower frequency stating the aircraft’s complete call sign, position, altitude and direction of the crossing. If the aircraft is fitted with a transponder, squawk code VFR 7000 in C mode (altitude). Expect glider, paraglider and hang-glider activity in the summer.
For non-based aircraft, circuiting the airfield is prohibited during the following periods:
Monday to Saturday from 7 am to 8 am LT, from 12 noon to 1 pm LT and from 6 pm to 8 pm LT.
Bank holidays and Sundays.
